Video Blog – NHL Predictions

Every few days leading up to the NHL season, I’m gonna run a video blog with a couple predictions for the season.

This is my first crack at it, so cut me a little slack.  To make it easier, I’ve made the first two predictions my “safe” ones.  It’ll be harder when I start trying to defend predictions like “The Vancouver Canucks will struggle in the regular season, but have a great playoff run”.

Oh, and one other thing before the vid – I went to the Coyotes/Kings game last night and have a crazy long list of things to write about today, so look for that in the next day or two.  Unfortunately, I won’t be linking to what I promised yesterday (my take on the Coyotes sitch) because (thankfully) the Arizona Republic bought the article to run in their NHL/Coyotes preview piece in a couple weeks.

(By the way – thanks to those of you who’ve made it so I don’t have to charge for “premium content” or anything of the sort by donating a couple bucks to the cause.  Makes the time put in easier to justify!)

Nice job on the first video blog. I hope your Tavares prediction comes through. I am keeping my fingers crossed the Islanders are better than everyone is predicting they will be. No Stanley Cup, but better than last place.

nice, I actually snagged Toews and Huet in a pool on the same theory, Chicago should trounce a lot of teams whether Huet’s GAA is 2.5 or 3.2 (which it has never been in the NHL, his numbers are actually pretty solid). Add John Madden to the mix, an enormous stand-in-front guy in Byfuglien, Dave Bolland with a trajectory that you have to love (… The Preds are going to get manhandled in that division, the west once again will have 2-3 great teams miss the playoffs while 1-2 bad ones sneak into the east… jmho.

What are your thoughts on points for Tavares, Okposo, and whoever else you see getting attached to those guys? Are Tavares and Okposo both walking into spots on the top line? I have a pool where Tavares’s value (based on goals, assists, PPGs, and GWGs) is being placed around that of Ryan Kesler (not just because they look the same), Saku Koivu, Joe Pavelski, Stamkos, Kunitz, etc. They are comparing Okposo’s value to Prospal, Filppula, Giroux, Knuble, Cole, etc. (So basically, they are valuing both players as decent second-line point producers). Do you see Tavares, Okposo, or both, scoring a lot more than that?

The Canucks, a team you secretly love because it is in your blood, are gonna grind their way to a third division title in four years and then probably lose to Chicago somewhere in the post-season but I think it will be a better battle than last time.

Bourne, I think I’d have to say I agree with your choices, even though its tough to not pick my beloved Canucks. (Not realy if you look to our past) I think the vidoe blog is a entertaining but not as entertaining as it would be to see you swing that left handed club in your hands!

I think Huet is a good guy to pick for your fantasy team (by the way, you’re the lone unsigned-up guy for ours), and people will be shocked when he has a “great year”. So much success in sports is circumstantial, and being on a sweet team helps.

Tavares and Okposo will both be top line guys, yeah. They’re waiting on somebody to surprise them and be really good, and it just hasn’t happened yet – Nielsen, Comeau, Tambellini, Bailey – they need someone to be that guy. Because Trent Hunter and Richard Park are nice fill-in guys, but not game changers. Maybe they’ll have Doug Weight and his awful black Tuuks cruise with those guys on the PP.

I think Okposo will be better than JT this year, just all around… the guy is such a bull. As for points, I could see Okposo teasing a point a game (say, 70 in 80 games), but I have no idea on Tavares as far as points go. I think I’d be foolish to try to put a number to it right now, I really have no idea.

not too sure if i agree with your predicitons, (lets face it,
i don’t have a lick of a clue when it comes to sports,)
BUT you do look handsome, you’re well articulated, and
i think the golf club is a nice touch…
ps. can bri be in the next video?

I really like Chicago but you can count me in as a Huet hater. Not that I hate him, but I am hating on his ability to be the lone guy, he’s good but he doesn’t have anyone behind him that stands out. Maybe I’m wrong though, Goalies seem to come out of the blue sometimes. Anyway I feel they should augment that position mid season if it looks shaky. They have one of the best opportunities to go deep and I am having a hard time seeing Huet as being the guy playing every game in April

  8. Deirdre says:

Ok, I gotta ask – does your shirt actually read “Ireland” backwards – or did the video get flipped somehow?

  9. Marc says:

My guess is he’s using an iSight, which gives the mirror image on the video feed by default.

  10. Neil says:

Nothing like having your star broken in half during preseason… Jesus
