Help The Islanders

I’m in Santa Cruz with Easton, then flying to Kelowna, so I’m too busy right now to do better than this but….please, join in.

Justin, I agree with you in part because I witnessed things last year that were totally uncharacteristic of Nic, but he still has enough in the tank to be an effective defenseman in the league. Quality defenseman are at such a premium that Nic can still be a standout for one more year. I don’t think that Nic will denigrate himself or his legacy by staying after that. Remember, he has never had a major injury and has a tremendous amount of pride. The Wings have a legitimate chance of winning the Cup and I don’t think Nic would jeoparize that chance because he is ineffective. Nic is the ultimate pro and will continue to be through this year.

Hi Justin, I read the column in the Kelowna Courier about your blog and promptly looked up your articles from USA Today. Your writing is excellent and I particularly liked the one on An Appeal for Change. It’s inspiring and I tried (unsuccessfully) to copy it on to Facebook with a further comment about you.
Do you remember when you were in my Grade 4 class and when we sang “O Canada” you used to walk away from your desk? I asked you why you did that and you answered that you liked to look at the flag while you sang. The flag was one I made out of construction paper and as a result of your comment, our school started a campaign to get a real flag in every one of the over a thousand classrooms in the district. We did it by Christmas the following year with help from service clubs, parent advisory committees and many local citizens. All thanks to your patriotism.
As the mother of a wonderful lesbian daughter in Vancouver and the grandmother of an equally amazing gay guy in Colorado, I was very proud of you for writing the column that also inspired Brian Burke’s son to come out of the closet.
Thank you for continuing to inspire your readers just as you inspired me to start the flag campaign years ago. I hope you still sing O Canada along with the Star Spangled Banner. Love, “Mrs. Hooper” (Margaret-Ann)

Mrs. Hooper! Of course I remember you. I remember the flag thing too! Thanks so much for the kind words…I used to actually like the spelling contest-y things we did in that class, maybe that’s where I started liking writing. Hope things are well with you are yours.

Great thing you’re doing. I always try to support such initiatives. As large organizations, hockey teams are finding great ways to give back to the community.
